We have been requested to post the Sun Tester 1215 Owner Manual.
The Colonial Region has an excellent original manual and is posting it so those that have a Sun Tester 1215 will have our same information as well as get it out there for all our members who may be interested in testing their classic on our Colonial Region Sun Tester.
A quick scan of the manual before bringing your classic in for the testing can make the test period shorter and provide you a means to understand the tester results. A review of the analysis section of the manual helps you to understand what the tester is measuring on your classic and if it’s determining a hidden latent defect that might be present in your classic.
So if cross firing is present (see the posting on cross firing) the Sun Tester 1215 will let you know. More importantly if you make corrections the Tester will identify if the corrective action actually worked!
Here is your copy of the manual:
The Colonial Region also has the Service Manual for the 1215 Sun Tester complete with notes written by a service technician on unique items in the Colonial Region Sun Tester. I have begun the process of scanning the Service Manual but since the task will take many more hours that the Owner’s Manual it will be some time before I will be able to publish the Service Manual.
If anyone has a question that might be answered by the Service Manual I could scan the manual for the answer and post it…..just give us a hoot. There are several wiring diagrams and circuit board descriptions that are easy to spot in the manual.
Hello,
I live up here in Sharon MA. I have a Sun 1215 machine that needs some work. I am interested in obtaining a copy of your Maint. Manual for this machine. I have some schematics for some of the boards but really need ones for the power supply etc. along with trouble shooting. I can be contacted at 781-784-2942 most of the time. Thanks for any help you can give me. Hope to obtain a 71 340 Duster I bought over in Nam and picked up at west Newton. Sold it and sorry I did….
Hello,
I have an operator manual. Did you ever get a maintenance manual? Schematics?
Jim
Original Sun Tester Service Manual sits in front of me….several hundred one sided pages in a three ring binder. The Plymouth Colonial Region vote on scanning the manual was no; mainly because most members send their vehicle out for servicing to others and couldn’t justify in their mind the expense of having it professionally scanned. My scanner is a manual, one page at a time, so I didn’t take on the project since the Region in general saw no value in doing that for their use.
Given that, there is a new development in the Region that could change things. The Region member that currently has the Sun Tester at this time has recently passed away and the spouse is “cleaning out”. No Region Member has stepped forward to operate, store, and maintain the tester.
Given that if you:
1) our within the area covered by the Region
2) are wishing to have an operating Sun Tester
3) want access to the manuals
I’m thinking if you joined the Region and were willing to let a Region member test their car at your location then an operating Sun 1215 Tester, manuals, and guidance on it’s use could be at your fingertips.
Recently I did a tech meeting at a club meeting where it’s currently located (just before Covid) and the tester was working fine at that time. I have, over many years, put multiple member cars on the tester in addition to mine but decided several years ago to pass along the info & tester to others. As far as I know only the exhaust measurement is non functional. It takes a long time to warm up but it always has so I do not think it’s a developing problem.
We have Desotos, Dodges, and Plymouths in the Region both modified & original.
Do you want me to run this idea past the president?
Don,
I am interested in the 1215 if still available. wbethoney@hotmail.com, 781-784-2942

Our Region President had hoped to find a Region Member willing to locally store the tester & let Region Members use it. If you met that criteria then please let me know so arrangements can be formalized. If you are suggesting that the Region sell it to you then that is a different matter and the Region President would have to call for a vote of the Region. Personally I would not vote for endorsing that option since the original purpose of the tester donation to the Region is to have a method by which the members could do a full diagnosis on their pre-90 cars.
